This question has been a thing of contention in the practice today and lingers in our mind. Nurses work an average of 8-12hrs per day, they are always with the patient and are exposed to various risk during their practice.
Nurses at the verge of delivering their care tell their patients to take care of themselves through exercise, healthy eating and other ways to promote optimal health, but the burning question is, who takes care of the Nurse? By Definition, A Nurse is someone who has undergone training either in Nursing school ,university or in a specific speciality school and he/she is licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery council to give care.
Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC U.K ) highlighted 6Cs of effective Nursing care which are: Care, compassion, courage, commitment, communication and competence.
The effective Nursing care means that the Nurse is expected to do this every time He/she is carrying out his/her professional obligation. Nurses do this virtually on everyday basis.
Moreover,Nursing is a selfless service ,endowed with the art and science of caring.Patients who are consumer of health beckon on Nurses almost every minute to do one or two things for them, but no one cares if the Nurse in question is in a good condition to do that. According to survey carried out through interview from colleagues, they were asked, "who takes care of the Nurse"?.80% gave their answer to be Nobody, while 20% said the Nurse itself takes care of him/herself.
The Nurse at all time would want to work within the standard of the profession to edify and promote the good name of the profession, even when she's not fit physically, mentally or psychologically.
My sincere answer to this question is Nobody . The Nurse is taken care of by herself and her family.
In addition,It's no gain saying the fact that Nurses need to be conversant and conscious of their health, because nobody cares for you, except yourself and your family.
As it stands today in the country today, there's no scheme of health that reviews the health of it's medical personnel on yearly basis, which is not supposed to be so.
In conclusion, Nurses should take responsibility for their health and wellness, while being versatile in your practice, do not become a good Nurse that slumps after long hours of duty, but be a good Nurse that sees her health as Paramount, because your service would be needed for a long time.Nurses are advised to take care of themselves ,because while you are gone, you won't be able to potentiate the furtherance of your driven passion to care for people.
