UNION CRIES OUT FOR RECRUIT OF MORE NURSES AND MIDWIVES.

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses
and Midwives (NANNM) yesterday in Lagos
urged the three tiers of the government to
recruit more nurses and midwives.
This, it said, was necessary to reduce
maternal and child mortality.
National President Mr. AbdulRafiu Adeniji
said at a news conference that the
recruitment would reduce deaths.
He said the recruitment of professional
nurses would promote staffing and improve
health care service delivery.
"Employment of skilled health care workers is
unavoidable as a nation, because it will
reduce maternal and child mortality and
prevent deaths.
"The government needs to procure hospital
equipment to reduce the rate of medical
tourism.
"The leadership of the association hails the
Federal Government for the measUnion
advocates recruitment of nurses, midwives
ures put in place to reduce maternal
mortality.
"However, the association has a lot of
reservation for task shifting and sharing
policy, as it is leaving tasks related to the
lives of mothers and children.
"We call for holistic review of this policy
document so as not to further compromise
the health of mothers and infants," Adeniji
said. He urged the government to ensure
protection and security at health facilities.
"We frown at the abduction and killing of a
midwife, who was brutally murdered in Borno
State by her abductors.
"This is unacceptable to nurses and
midwives. The government needs to ensure
release of other health workers still being
held hostage.
"It is expedient that the three tiers of the
government use their position to ensure unity,
peace and harmony," Adeniji said.
He promised that nurses and midwives would
render quality health care services.
